Gethsemene: Betrayal in the Garden (Morning)

Mark 14:41–52

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What are some things you learn or better understand about Jesus in this passage?

  2. What are some things you learn or better understand about what it looks like to follow Jesus in this passage?

  3. How would you contrast what Joel and Cole called the “way of the sword” (seen, for example, in Peter's response in 14:47) and "the “way of the cross” (seen, for example, in Jesus' response in 14:48-49)?

  4. In what ways have you seen yourself or other Christians living by the “way of the sword?” In other words, how have you seen Christians seeking to overcome the world through power and standing up for themselves rather than following Jesus’ example of faithful submission?

  5. What holds you back from fully letting go of “the way of the sword” personally?

  6. What are some practical ways you could live out the “way of the cross” (faith-driven submission) in the next few weeks?

  7. Read Philippians 3:20-4:1 (the benediction in today’s service). Does anything from this Scripture help us “stand firm” in the way of the cross rather than turning to the way of the sword?
