Words of Life

John 6:47-71

Discussion Questions:

  1. What most stands out most to you in the Scripture and why?

  2. This year we'll be studying Peter's life and the book of 1 Peter. What do you already know about Peter's life or 1 Peter? What do you personally hope to learn or grow in through studying Peter as a church?

  3. Throughout the passage, Jesus contrasts the physical bread the crowds seek with the "life" he is offering (see 6:48, 6:51, 6:63). When you hear Jesus offering "life,” what do you think he means? How might Jesus’ definition of life be similar to—or different from—the things we often pursue?

  4. What sticks out to you about the crowds response to Jesus after this exchange? About Peter's response?

  5. What reactions do you have to the exclusivity of Jesus's claim - that the only path to life is through him and there is no other way?

  6. Jeff mentioned that "Peter is a great model of discipleship rather than a model of a great disciple." What do you think this means and how should it inform the way we study Peter's failures, growth, and faith this semester?

  7. Reread John 6:70. How does it affect you to see that the starting point for our relationship with Jesus is not that we chose him, but that he chose us?
