Read Daniel 3:1-25.
What most sticks out to you in this account, and why?
Nebuchadnezzar built a 90-foot statute and demanded everyone bow to the might and spirit of Babylon. What are some “statues” today’s culture sets up that we might face pressure to bow down to? Which of these modern "statues" would be hardest for you to refuse, and how can you be prepared to stand firm when there is a cost?
Read Daniel 3:16-18. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn't just refuse to bow, they were willing to face the furnace whether or not God rescued them. Their answer to the king had two parts: "God is able to deliver us" AND "even if He does not, we still will not bow.” Why is it important to hold both of those truths at the same time: God's power AND the willingness to obey even without a guaranteed rescue?
Verse 25 says there was a fourth man who “is like the son of the gods” who was in the fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. How can it encourage our faith when we are in the fire that God doesn’t watch from a distance, but is with us in it? Can you recall a time when you felt God’s presence with you in the fire?
In verse 27, we read that not a hair on their heads was singed, nor their cloaks harmed, and no smell of fire was upon them. Have you ever come out of a hard season and, like these men, realized you didn’t even smell like smoke - that God protected something in you that you expected to be damaged?
How can knowing God is with us in all of our trials encourage us to be bold and courageous in our faith?
What is one truth from this passage that you want to remember the next time you are afraid, in a trial, or tempted to bow down to cultural statues? What would you want to preach to yourself at that moment?
