The Restoration & Calling of Peter

John 20:31-21:25

Discussion Questions:

  1. What most sticks out to you in this passage and why?

  2. How does Peter respond to encountering Jesus once again (vv.7)? Is this what you expect given their last interaction (Peter denying Jesus in Luke 22)?

  3. In what ways do you see aspects of both kindness/grace and firmness/discipline in Jesus's interaction with Peter?

  4. Have you personally experienced the Lord moving towards you with simultaneous discipline and grace? How has that affected you?

  5. Joel quoted Tim Keller saying, "Religious people find God useful. Growing Christians find God beautiful." How does that land on you? Do you agree or disagree? Have you witnessed this in your own life or with others?

  6. Why do you think Jesus continually asks Peter if he loves him rather than asking him if he's devoted to him, willing to obey him, etc? (If helpful consider reading Revelation 2:2-5 and 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 as you answer this question)

  7. Would you say that your primary response to God has been a growing love of him? If so, what has that love looked like but if not, why do you think that is?

  8. How does Jesus's final call of "follow me" land on you tonight? How do you think he has calling you to heed that command?
