  1. What specifically about the the good news of the gospel (1 Peter 1:3-5) actually causes you to rejoice (vv. 6)?

  2. How is it that Christians are able to be "sorrowful, yet always rejoicing" (2 Corinthians 6:10)?

  3. What are some of the various trials you've experienced in your life? What impact have these trials had on you?

  4. John Newton (17th century Anglican cleric and writer of the hymn Amazing Grace) once wrote, "everything is needful [necessary] that God sends, nothing can be needful that he withholds." What reactions do you have to this statement?

  5. Are there any ways that you've personally experienced  the trials of your life being "necessary" (1:6)?

  6. What does it mean for faith to be "genuine" (vv. 7), and why do you think genuine faith is so precious to God?

  7. What are some things that we can pray for during trials other than praying only for deliverance or a change in circumstances?
