Found Wanting
Daniel 5:1-12, 17-30
Discussion Questions:
What most sticks out to you in Daniel 5, and why?
Throughout this passage, what does Belshazzar seem to think is of value and worth? In contrast, what does Daniel seem to think is of value or worth? If helpful, look back at Daniel 5:16-17.
Joel made the point that king Belshazzar gathered everything together for a celebration potentially in an attempt to convince himself that his life mattered. Apart from knowing Jesus, what would you gather to find meaning in your life prior to knowing Jesus? Why are or were these things so precious to you?
Thinking about your answers to the previous question, are there any ways that you still find yourself tempted to place your trust in these things rather than Jesus to convince yourself that your life matters or has value?
The words written on the wall to Belshazzar (MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN) were words of judgement. In Christ, these words still remain but have different implications for our lives. How does it now affect you to remember that on one hand, God has numbered our days and we will die, but on the other hand, Christ has been weighed in the scales and judged righteous in our place?
Joel finished his sermon by reminding us of the power of the Finger of God (Luke 11:19-20) to set us free from the sins that beset us. In what area of your life do you need to believe in the miraculous power of God to set you free right now?
Is there someone in your life we can be pray for tonight that needs the Finger of God to intervene in their life?
